PIER Startup Bootcamp is a series of four startup workshops that PIER offers on a regular yearly basis. Focusing on different stages of business startup and entrepreneurship, the workshops provide early-career researchers interested in founding their own company with the necessary knowledge, skills and techniques. The workshops can be taken in a consecutive order but may also be booked individually.
PIER Startup Bootcamp I: Design Thinking
08 April 2022, 10 am - 4 pm (via Zoom)
In this workshop, PhD students and postdocs get an overview of the Design Thinking approach, a creativity technique they can use to generate/utilize ideas from their own research results. In addition, they learn how to develop new products or services as well as their own business models using their own ideas. The workshop offers a mix of theoretical input as well as creative and practical group exercises, which encourage the participants to think and act like entrepreneurs when analyzing their ideas and business models. The workshop will be moderated by Andreas Voss (Concis Group! & People & Friends).
PIER Startup Bootcamp II: Business Modeling
24 June 2022, 10 am - 4 pm
In this workshop, graduate students and scientists receive an overview of “state-of-the-art“ tools and methods used by entrepreneurs and companies worldwide. The participants learn how they can develop and design business models based on their own ideas or research results using the Business Model Canvas (BMC), the Value Proposition Canvas (VPC) and the Systems Thinking approach. Besides covering these topics, the participants get an overview of the business plan and learn how they can transfer their own business ideas, Business Model Canvas or research results into this more classical framework. PIER Startup Bootcamp III: Trends, Markets and Opportunities - Market Analysis for Startups

It is crucial for startups to develop a market-oriented perspective that is customer-centric. The aim of this workshop is to provide the participants with the basics of market analysis in an interactive and practical way. We will equip them with the tools they need in order to further develop their own business ideas and business models in line with market requirements and to position them successfully in the market. PIER Startup Bootcamp IV: Finance, Business Plan and Funding for Startups
02 December 2022, 10 am - 4 pm
In the workshop, graduate students and scientists get introduced to sound financial planning methods for start-ups projects and learn how they can transfer their own business ideas or research results into different financial frameworks. The participants will also learn about various financing strategies and opportunities such as Venture Capital, government grants, debts, subsidies and other funding opportunities for start-ups along the different stages from idea generation to the actual establishment of a company in Germany and the EU.
