More than 120 PhD and master's students have attended the fifth PIER Graduate Week from 8 - 11 October 2018 in Hamburg's Center for Free-Electron Laser Science.
The four-day workshop and lecture week, in which national and international speakers had offered a wide range of introductory and focus courses in the PIER research fields Particle and Astroparticle Physics, Nanoscience, Photon Science, and Infection and Structural Biology was well received by students and speakers alike.
The graduate week's main objective was to introduce PhD students to neighbouring research fields, and to offer stimulating specialists' lectures from both national and international experts, thereby broadening the interdisciplinary understanding and exchange among young scientists on Bahrenfeld campus.
A scientific colloquium, an industry lecture and workshops on entrepreneurship and presentation skills complemented the programme. During the graduate week, joint coffee breaks, lunches and get-togethers provided opportunities for informal discussions, exchange of ideas, and socialising.
To promote the interdisciplinary exchange between the students, the participants of the graduate week were invited to present their research projects in a poster session. A jury, consisting of Prof. Fredrik Westerlund (Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden) and Prof. Daniela Pfannkuche of Universität Hamburg awarded four PhD students with a poster prize: Mia Lahey-Rudoph ("Serial protein crystallography in living insect cells: Novel concepts of data collection"), Karolina Stachnik ("3D Multimodal X-ray nano-imaging of biological samples"), Mohammad Vakili ("In Situ SAXS for Time-resolved Soft Matter Studies") and Ramakrishna Vasireddi ("GDVN based microfluidic liquid jet technology for various applications"). Congratulations to the four awardees!
Industry talk and scientific colloquium
In the evenings, two speakers addressed a broader audience: Orit Peleg (University of Colorado, Boulder) talked about "The Physics of Disordered Living Systems: Collective Adaptation in Honeybee Swarms". Dr. Peleg, who has recently been appointed assistant professor at Boulder's BioFrontiers Institute, focuses in her research on a combination of biological experiments, theory and computation to understand how a collective of bees can integrate physical and behavioral cues to attain a non-equilibrium steady state that allows them to resist and respond to environmental fluctuations of forces and flows (Deutsche Welle TV has covered Orit's research recently, see here).
In the industry talk, Dr. Aiko Ruprecht, talked about his job as Head of Advance Development at Wedel-based Trioptics GmbH, which enables him to combine both the business and the research worlds. Trioptics is an internationally orientated company that develops, produces, and markets high-quality, innovative optical measuring and manufacturing technology for lenses, lens systems and camera modules.
