In the recent call for PIER Seed Projects, nine proposals have been selected by the jury to receive seed funding out of the PIER Idea Fund. 22 applications had been submitted to the PIER Office until the deadline on August 31st, 2017. Among the successful proposals are projects from all PIER research fields, many of them with an interdisciplinary perspective. For the nine selected projects, DESY and Universität Hamburg will allocate a total funding amount of more than 300,000 Euros over the course of two years.
“We were quite impressed by the overall scientific quality of the submitted applications”, says jury member Prof. Dr. Franz Kärtner. “Nevertheless, the nine selected proposals clearly stood out from the rest. They convinced the jury not only because of their excellent scientific quality and originality but also because of their focus on cooperation between DESY and Universität Hamburg researchers. Since the promotion of cooperation between the two institutions is one of the main objectives of the PIER Idea Fund, this criterion was, scientific quality aside, decisive in our final choice of the grant-worthy projects.”
The recent call for PIER Seed Projects was the seventh since the founding of PIER in 2011. Besides providing seed money for joint DESY and Universität Hamburg research projects, PIER also supports workshops and international fellowships under its Idea Fund funding scheme. The overall aim of the activities within the scope of the PIER Idea Fund is to promote the development and implementation of excellent research ideas and projects based on the cooperation between DESY and Universität Hamburg researchers. The next PIER Seed Projects Call is expected to be issued in the summer of 2018. Applications for PIER Workshops and PIER Fellowships can be continually submitted starting in January 2018.
