PhD Representatives DOIT

The doctoral candidates in PIER's research and competence fields are represented by DOIT.

DOIT speakers in 2019: Felix Giese and Marius Hoffmann.

DOIT (Doktorandeninitiative) and the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School work closely together. The elected representatives are the voice of PIER's doctoral candidates.

On 13 February 2019, all PhD students on Bahrenfeld campus were intived to the annual plenary meeting of DOIT. In the context of this meeting, Marius Hoffmann (DESY-FLC) and Felix Giese (DESY Theoretical Cosmology Group) have been elected as official PhD student representatives.

Marius and Felix are taking over from Nicole Stefanov (CMS) and Florian Christie (MPY), who had been DOIT representatives since February 2018. The representatives' responsibilities cover the general interests of PhD Students on Campus Bahrenfeld and in the strategic partnership of DESY and University of Hamburg, PIER (Partnership for Innovation, Education and Research).

DOIT was founded in 2006. The members meet once per month and cordially invite all PhD candidates to participate. About 300 PhD students are working on the Bahrenfeld Campus. More than 100 of those students are paid by DESY, all others have contracts with universities or are scholarship holders. DOIT wants to represent all of them. For more information on DOIT's activities and the speakers, visit DOIT's website.

DOIT looks outside the box: Job seminars on career options for scientists

Among DOIT's numerous activities is a series of lectures called "job seminar". The lectures are addressed to all young scientists who want to get an overview of the various career opportunities for physicists. Former DESY PhD students and external physicists talk about their experience in 'real' life, how they applied for their job and what they are doing now. After the lecture there is usually time for questions and discussion with the speakers. Past and future dates and topics can be found here.

Info flyer for new and prospective PhD students

The DOIT speakers have compiled a compact and informativeinfo flyer for students who are about to start their PhD in Hamburg. It contains useful links and tips on the enrollment procedure, housing, public transport, international affairs and sports and leisure activities.
