Prof. Gerhard Klimeck of Purdue University, visiting international researcher at the Center for Hybrid Nanostructures (CHyN) of Universität Hamburg, has been awarded the prestigious Humboldt Research Award. The award was bestowed upon him by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in recognition of his academic accomplishments in the area of nanoelectronic device theory, modeling and simulation. The nomination for the award was prepared by CHyN director Prof. Robert Blick during a preliminary research visit of Prof. Klimeck that was funded by PIER. Blick will also be Klimeck’s academic host during the twelve months research stay that is part of the Humboldt Research Award.

“I’m very much looking forward to continuing the fruitful collaboration with Robert Blick and his colleagues at Universität Hamburg and at DESY”, says Prof. Klimeck. “We want to further intensify our cooperation in topics of common interests in nanoelectronics, in particular single electron devices, and work in detail on modeling novel low-dimensional device geometries, such as single and double layer graphene, topological insulators, and hybrid bio-nano-devices.”

Robert Blick, too, is pleased that Klimeck will be able to prolong his research stay in Hamburg. “Thanks to the PIER Short Visits Grant we could initiate a mutually beneficial collaboration that we can build upon now”, Blick says. “Gerhard Klimeck has defined the state of the art of nanoelectronics device modeling approach and software that spans from individual advanced research to industrial use. We are very happy to have his input here at CHyN where we can combine his decades of experience with our new approaches to computing, let it be towards solid-state quantum computing circuits or devices such as solid-state DNA-sequencers, or truly hybrid soft/solid-circuits, consisting of bio-molecules such as DNA as novel memory storage devices, and photonic devices.”
