An international centre for researching nanomaterials is currently being built in Hamburg. The centre will focus on the synthesis and the non-destructive analysis and examination of new kinds of functional materials and their molecular processes under conditions of environmental, technological and industrial relevance. In this field, the cooperation between Universität Hamburg and DESY concentrates on the areas of nanomagnetism, nanomechanics, nanostructured functional materials, growth, structure formation and nanobiomedicine. The unparalleled PETRA III and FLASH X-ray sources enable researchers in Hamburg to not only analyse nanostructures in extreme detail and with maximal chronological precision but also study the associated key molecular processes that occur at the nanoscale.
